Cell Phone Theft Tracker App

It ends up that the United States is not the only place where cell phone theft has spiked. The United Kingdom, which includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland is also suffering from the ravages of cell phone thieves. According to the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, between 250,000 and 300,000 phones are stolen and reported to police each year in Britain.

It's hard not to wonder how technical geniuses can create smartphone technology that almost boggles the mind with the scope of their functions, yet fall short in creating technology that makes such phone theft proof or more easily traceable when they are lost are stolen.

A new alert system is showing some promise. The brainchild of the mobile security firm Lookout, the device provides contextual alerts whenever suspicious activity takes place on the device.

As Lookout detailed, cell phone thieves tend to remove SIM cards and power off the device to try to keep the owner from tracing their phone by calling their number or from tracking it.

The Theft Alert system by Lookout is so “smart” that it recognises these track-defeating actions. Within minutes of these actions, the alert emails the victim of cell phone theft an email. The email message provides a photo of the person taking such actions, which is known as a “theftie, and the device's exact location. With these clues, a victim can try to get their stolen property back.

Other distinguishing features of Lookout's technology is that if an incorrect passcode is entered, Airplane mode enabled and Lookout removed as device administrator, the same alert to the victim is activated.

Lookwatch and GotYa! also utilize technology where a theftie and the device location is emailed to the owner. However, they don't incorporate the additional features that Lookout provides.

Lookout Mobile Security Premium's Theft Alerts is now available for Android and iOS is now available. Lookout Premium on Android costs £1.99 per month or £19.99 annually, and £1.99 per month or £20.99 annually on iOS.

On their website, Lookout describes themselves as Security for the Post-PC era. See link https://www.lookout.com/.
