Will avatars and robots be our playmates of the future?

This sort of thing is seen in movies and on TV all the time. The movie “Avatar” and the movie “The surrogates” suggests that people may one day interact in the real world with a robotic avatar. And, movies such as “Serenity” and “Bicentennial man” suggest that we may one day take automated avatar automatons as lovers. And, this leads to other more interesting questions for our near future. Will Facebook interaction build into an avatar-based system? Where does Facebook go as time goes on? People are already predicting that the Internet will be replaced by something else in as little as seven years, so what of Facebook in the future? They have moved to mobile Internet and Facebook is now commonly used on there, but will there be a time when we can interact in the real world with the avatar of a person of Facebook. How this will happen is unknown, as holographic technology may be used, or a physical robot may take on the form of the people you are communicating with. Such technology is no different than being able to hear a person’s voice when they are miles away or being able to see a video feed of a person in real time. Will people fall in love with automated avatars? Yes, of course they will. People have the capacity to fall in love with anything from their favorite mug to a cyber pet. People have fallen in love online without ever even seeing each other’s face, only to discover that they are absolutely not right for each other. Can a computer program have a soul? The Dr from Star Trek Voyager would potentially argue yes (at least in the 5th season he may), but since the soul is indefinable then who is to say if one is not inserted if a certain level of consciousness is achieved. After all, our brains are only made up of carbon molecules arranged very carefully with electric signals flying between them. Will a holographic avatar of a medical database ever exist? Again, the Dr from Star Trek Voyager seems to be a device we could all use. It would be a hologram avatar of a database of medical knowledge that could diagnose and cure using its database. If avatars were going to exist in the real world, then wouldn’t an avatar doctor help humanity more than any other type of avatar?
