Finding Ways Avatars may be used in the Classroom

Avatars may be used on desktop computers in the classroom, on a TV in the corner, or via projector into the classroom. There are even some who feel it is one step up from having kids watching educational movies in class because you can set an avatar to only talk about things that are relevant to the class. Here are a few ways you may use an avatar in your classroom. Talking books Instead of students having to stand up at the front of the class to recommend a book, the avatar they create has to do it for them. The same may be done for persuasive speeches, where the student has the avatar make the speech. Learning other language The teacher may plan the lesson by having the avatar talk back. The teacher may make the lesson into an interactive session where the interactivity happens between the teacher and the avatar. It may be like having another person in the class teaching in a structured/rehearsed way. Vocabulary Building When the avatar is used, it should explain the larger words it uses. Over time the students will start to use those words without knowing it. They will also start to gain an understanding of certain words based on the context in which they are used. It is up to the teacher to make sure the vocabulary of the avatar is not dumbed down. As part of a PowerPoint Students and teachers alike are going to have to create PowerPoint productions, and the insertion of an avatar may help to take a lot of the presenting work away from the creator and put it on the shoulders of the avatar. The student or teacher presenting could interact with the avatar for a little bit of showmanship effect, and it may help to keep the people watching more awake and alert. Start a Dialog It is worrying to think that some students may only be gotten through to via social media, so if some may only be gotten to via an avatar then it may be time to pull the plug on the world. Still, you could use an avatar as a fun way of creating a dialog in the classroom. Classroom Newsletter There is nothing wrong with having your avatar read out the weekly newsletter. Your boss probably wants you to read it out, yet it can be copied and pasted into an avatar program and the avatar can read it out for you. Have the avatar declare course announcements Every time there is a course announcement the avatar can announce it on the startup screen then the students put their desktop computers on. When they sign in with their own account you may have it update them via an unskippable section. Tests It may be fun to have an avatar pop up during computer based tests. It can pop up and ask questions that have to be answered before the student can carry on. The introductions would serve as great practice for real life scenarios.
